Wittgenstein Award 2022 granted to microONE collaborator, Christa Schleper.

Christa Schleper studies microorganisms, particularly Archaea, and their importance to ecosystems since more than 25 years. Now, her outstanding scientific achievements in this field were recognised by awarding her Austria’s most prestigious scientific honour, the Wittgenstein Award.
Christa Schleper studied biology in Aachen and Constance, received her doctoral degree from the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich, and has taught and conducted research in the USA, Norway, and Germany. As one of the most cited researchers in Austria, she has been a professor at the University of Vienna and the head of the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology since 2007. Christa Schleper is an elected member of the American Academy of Microbiology and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Within microONE, she is actively supporting the activities around microbiome research and will be part of the planned mentoring scheme to promote young female researchers to overcome existing barriers in career development.
